Rooney, William – journalist, poet, and Gaelic Revivalist

William Rooney (1873–1901) was an Irish nationalist, journalist, poet and Gaelic revivalist. Along with Arthur Griffith and Denis Devereux he founded the Celtic Literary Society at his home on 23 Leinster Avenue, where the plaque will be erected. Along with Arthur Griffith he founded the first Cumann na nGaedheal. He was born on the 29th September 1873 in the Monto in north inner city Dublin, his family later moving to Leinster Avenue.
